The term of office for the mayoral race in the city of Kalama was discovered yesterday afternoon to
be incorrect on the Kalama City ballots. The term of office for the position of Mayor, City of
Kalama, was to have been a full four -year term plus an additional short -term. The ballot lists the
term as "two -year unexpired ".
The Kalama Mayor's position expires December of 2005 and should be presented to the voters as a
full four -year term. The short term, intended to cover the time between the election and the first
official day of the full term, was generated by the resignation of the former mayor, Randy
Bradshaw. Randy resigned before completion of his elected term.
"Ballots are to be mailed this week. Our choices were to hold up the mailing and reprint the
ballots, or let the error stand. After discussing the possible solutions to this error with the
interested parties from the Secretary of State to the attorney for the City of Kalama, it was
agreed to be in the best interest of our voters to not reprint the ballot. Ultimately, candidates are
elected to the office, not the term. "said Kristina Swanson, Cowlitz County Auditor.
Pete Poulsen, the only candidate to have filed for the position, when notified of the error, stated,
"It is not worth the effort or the expense to change this information. I am willing to serve the
whole term, be it two or four years."
The Cowlitz County Voters Pamphlet also stated the term of office for the Mayor, City of Kalama
incorrectly.
Ballots were held up by one day while the error was investigated, but will be mailed on Thursday,
October 20, 2005.
